Stop Being Shy On Camera: A Small Business Owner's Guide To Making Content

One can argue that recording yourself is a science or an art. In reality, it is a bit of both.
But have no fear, here are a few tips that will have you getting your degree in the art of
recording in no time.
Firstly, let’s talk setup. It’s all about lighting and background. The best lighting is natural,
so if you have a window, try to record your video facing it. Now your background can
vary. If you want a clean, solid look, it’s important to think about adding extra lighting.
But if you’re okay with a more lively background, like your kitchen or library, the
window setup will work perfectly.
Pro Tip:
Always look at the camera
Make sure you are in frame
Let us move on to Audio. A quiet space is usually best when recording a conversation or
a singular person's point of view. Unless your whole aesthetic is to be in a bustling area, then my only advice would be that you take advantage of using a mic so we can hear you.
Pro Tip:
Use a microphone
Test Audio
Next is creating your business owner content. If you are anything like me, then you have 1 million thoughts running through your mind per second. This is why it’s vital to always write down main points. Think about your main point in three categories: hook, message, and close.
Your hook will invite people in through enticement, while your message is the core of
your conversation. Close it off with an outro.
Pro Tip:
Less is more
Short but Focused
Do not memorize verbatim
Lastly, confidence. Getting in front of the camera can seem nerve-racking, so it’s
important to feel your best so you can create your best. Personally, wearing clothing that
makes me feel bold is the best way to go. My only advice is to avoid busy clothing
unless that is your brand. It is also important to practice a few times, not more or less. This
will allow you to readjust without overcorrecting.
Pro Tip
Be yourself
Stay on brand
Natural over perfection
At the end of the day, it’s not about being perfect or having the perfect setup; it’s about
showing up as you. The more you practice, the more natural it feels, and that confidence
is what really translates on camera. So do away with the fear, press record, have fun, and
remember your voice and presence are already enough.
