Not All Review Platforms Are Created Equal
If you run a business, you have probably heard that reviews matter. Heck, if you read any of our blogs you know that reviews matter. But here is the thing: not all review platforms work the same way, and knowing the difference can change how you approach them.
Google Reviews: Built Into Search (Also, the largest search engine)
Google Reviews live directly inside Google Search and Google Maps. When someone searches for your business, your star rating is right there in the results. Because leaving a review only requires a Google account, the barrier is low and volume is usually high. Google Reviews are deeply tied to how Google ranks local businesses.
Yelp: A Community Built Around Reviews
Yelp was built from the ground up as a review platform. Its users tend to write longer, more detailed feedback. The platform also uses a filtering algorithm that screens out reviews from brand-new or inactive accounts, which makes reviews harder to collect quickly but more credible overall. A strong Yelp rating often carries extra weight with savvy shoppers who know the system is tougher to game.
