We covered the 4 types of SEO a few times and plan to break it down even more for ya over the next few weeks. Now here is what has changed and what your business needs to know right now.

If you read our post on the 4 types of SEO, you already know the foundation: on-page, off-page, technical, and local. That is still the framework. But SEO in 2026 looks very different from SEO in 2023. (Or, based on this tiktok video we did, someone said we give 2009 knowledge. All the info is still important). Think of it this way: The rules have not changed. The game has.

Here is what every business owner needs to understand about SEO right now.

01

AI search has rewritten on-page SEO

On-page SEO used to mean: use the right keywords, structure your headings well, and write content your audience wants to read. That is still true. But there is a new audience you are writing for: AI. (You don't have to use AI even though we have to write for AI)

Tools like Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity now answer search queries directly, pulling from websites that are clear, well-structured, and authoritative. If your pages are not built to be cited by these tools, you are losing visibility before a single click happens.

The shift: stop writing for impressions. Start writing to answer real questions directly and completely. We have always said "Write for Google. Think for Humans." But now it's "Write for AI Overview and remember Human's might scroll....fast."

Off-page SEO is about trust not always the links.

Backlinks still matter. But the quality of where those links come from matters far more than the quantity. In 2026, AI search engines and Google are both weighing authority and trustworthiness heavily. A mention in a relevant industry publication outperforms ten links from directories nobody visits.

Social media, podcast appearances, press features, and consistent content publishing all feed into how credible your brand looks online. Off-page SEO is really about reputation over how much can you link on a page.

Technical SEO is no longer optional

Page speed, mobile performance, security, and clean site structure have always been part of technical SEO. In 2026, they are non-negotiable. Google's Core Web Vitals are a ranking factor. A slow site on mobile is a site that is quietly sinking. Now, add knowing about ADA, Privacy Policies and Terms & Conditions to the mix.

The good news is that most technical SEO issues are fixable. The bad news is that most business owners do not know they have them until they are already hurting.

Local SEO is still one of the highest-ROI moves for small businesses

This one has not changed much and that is actually great news. If you serve a specific area, local SEO is one of the most cost-effective things you can invest in. Your Google Business Profile, consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across the web, and local reviews are still the core of it.

So, wtf has shifted? Your Google Business Profile now pulls into AI answers for local queries. Keeping it updated, accurate, and active is more important than ever. Especially your business hours.

Alicia's Pro Tip (and maybe her pet peeve). make sure your business name, address, and hours are identical everywhere they appear online. Inconsistencies confuse search engines and cost you ranking. Plus, no one wants to guess what your hours ACTUALLY are.

Our favorite thing is to local businesses in Baltimore and Philadelphia get found by the right people in the right places. Events are also a great way to do that (even though it's technically not SEO)
