Boundaries to Avoid Burnout (But Bend Where You Can)

Burnout rarely shows up all at once nor do we catch it typically before it happens. It creeps in through the small yeses: the late night email, the weekend call, the "just this once" that becomes every time. Every client becomes the exception and not the rule. Boundaries are how you stop that slow leak, but rigid rules can crack under real life.
Start with your non negotiables.
Pick two or three boundaries that protect your baseline: a firm end to your workday, one full day off, a set number of hours of sleep. These are the ones you defend even on hard weeks, because they're what keep you functional.
Then build in flex on purpose.
Not every boundary needs to be absolute. Maybe you take an early call for a big client, or answer one message on vacation because it takes two minutes and buys you peace of mind. Flexibility you choose is different from flexibility that gets taken from you.
Notice the difference between bending and breaking.
Bending is a conscious trade you make for a good reason. Breaking is when the exception quietly becomes the new normal. Check in with yourself: is this a one time bend, or is the boundary gone?
Communicate the boundary When you do flex, say so out loud. "I don't usually take calls after 6, but I can do this one." That keeps the boundary visible, even while you're stepping around it.
Boundaries aren't about being rigid. They're about staying intentional, so the choices are yours, not your business's.
