Should You Skip a Black Friday Sale? (As A Small Business Owner)
Black Friday is nearly upon us, and if you haven’t started planning, there’s no need to be frantic. In fact, you might not even need to do a sale! Before we dive in, know that this will be different for each business. What is right for service providers is not always the same for product-based businesses, and vice versa. However, we wanted to challenge your perspective on simply falling in line and doing what everyone else does without asking if it really makes sense for your business. We can’t wait to hear what you think about it.
Does it Actually Make Sense to Discount Your Product or Service?
Think about what you offer, who your audience is, and what your profit margins are. Do you need to clear out old stock to make room for new stock? A Black Friday sale might be aligned with your goals. Are you a luxury product seeking to build a name and stand out in that market? No Black Friday sale for you, friend. One thing we love to remind people is that their business is THEIRS. Do you even want to run a Black Friday sale, or would you rather enjoy the weekend with your loved ones? You get to make the choice and adjust your strategy to meet revenue goals in other ways if necessary. Are your services something that many people will benefit from having made more accessible once a year? Perhaps a Black Friday Sale makes sense in your case. Knowing your audience well and weighing every business choice against your brand values will help you make an aligned choice that works for you.
Why Mango is Skipping Black Friday
To start, it’s already incredibly rare that we discount our services anyway. We work hard and deliver a specialty service that brings a lot of value. We also hire experts who deserve to be compensated well for their skills and what they bring to our team. Heavy discounts provide fewer resources for us to do the work that we do to the standard that we’ve set. Mango isn’t a turn and burn agency. We moderate our workflow to ensure each client gets appropriate time and attention, and that means that we don’t work with just anyone. Our pricing allows us to respect our own brand values in that way. We’re proud of our commitment to the standard of service that we’ve set, and skipping out on tons of sales all year allows us to stick to that and continue to elevate how we show up, too.
On a deeper level, our society has a huge overconsumption problem, and we don’t want to encourage it. Digitally, we’re overwhelmed. Full email inboxes, full DM’s, always something new to see, crave, and buy. Yes, we want to sell our merch, but not at the expense of discounting it so much that you panic purchase a t-shirt you wouldn’t have otherwise because it was only $8 and free shipping on Black Friday.
Instead, we plan to spend Black Friday and Small Business Saturday educating ourselves, supporting other small businesses, and protecting our peace. Whatever you choose, we support you!
