People Don't Read: So How Do You Get Your Point Across
For all the things that marketing entails, one of its main requirements is a deep understanding of human behavior. As much as we’d love it if everyone moved through the process of viewer to customer the same way that we did, it’s just not true. When sharing your news, sales, and products with customers, it's important to be THOROUGH and repetitive. Why? Because people don’t read. When we say that, we really mean they read partially, they read selectively, and sometimes they truly don’t read at all. This is why it’s important to offer a variety of types of content to capture the attention of people with multiple connection styles. Let’s dive a little deeper.
Repeat yourself
It takes people, on average, between 7 and 21 exposures to take action on something. Whether it's converting to a sale, opting in to an email list, or signing up for an event, it’s never enough to just post or talk about what you’ve got going on one time and expect the results you’re looking for.
Repeat yourself in a different way
When you “repeat” your information, don’t just say the same thing over and over in the same way. Write a post, make a graphic, turn it into a blog, send an email, make a video, you get the drift? Say the same thing each time, but with an appropriate twist for its delivery. It’s not that you can’t ever repeat exactly what you’ve shared in the past, just remember that variety is not only the spice of life but the key to more customers taking action.
Remember, it’s your job to sell yourself
On social media, in the inbox, even via snail mail, you’re fighting through the noise of every other person who has something to promote or sell. As much as we love engaged customers who seek out our content and offerings, the reality is that it's your job as a business owner to make the connections you need to bring new customers and clients into your business. The long and short of doing that successfully? Repeating yourself with authority and enthusiasm.
