One of the biggest challenges that many business owners face is selling themselves. Even if you’re really passionate about your product or service, it can feel humbling to have to actually ask people to buy from you. Not to worry! We’ve been there and we’re here to give you our top-most recommended advice when it comes to sales that don’t give you, or the people you’re selling to, the ick.
Build relationships
Sometimes sales take time and effort. You gotta wine and dine the people once in a while. Stay away from things like cold calling or DMing strangers and immediately dropping the sale on them. You can definitely get to know people through social media by engaging with their posts, chatting in their stories, and just being a generally decent and kind human. The algorithm will work in your favor and share your content with them more frequently, and you can offer a sale if they reach out with questions. Whatever you do, respect people’s decisions and only contact them on appropriate platforms.
Be thoughtful
It doesn’t take much effort to be present, intentional, and engaged with your customers. Little things like sending personalized emails on birthdays, shooting a thank you email, and being willing to make introductions can go a long, long way to build brand loyalty and people who will tell others about your brand too!
Offer value
Before you expect to receive value, make sure you’re offering it. Your content should include much more than a constant ask for the sale. Put effort into educating your customers, entertaining them, and even giving them little treats like samples from time to time. Non-sales posts that drive brand loyalty are a part of the sales process that must come before a hard sell for the best results.
Solve problems
The most successful products and services solve a “problem”, or a perceived problem, for people. Whether it provides a tangible solution, gives them a feeling, adds variety to their life, or something else entirely, if you highlight a need and show people how you meet the need, the sales will sell for themselves. Solving problems could also be removing a barrier between your product and a person who wants to buy it but can’t. This could look like offering flexible payment programs, offering products for a variety of budgets, doing giveaways, or adding benefits to loyalty programs.
If you show people who you are, make them feel like you care, and they can trust you, and always deliver value, sales will come without the need for any uncomfortable sales tactics or slimy strategies.
