One of our favorite things to do is follow the marketing shenanigans of different brands in different industries. Through our observations, we feel that a clear winner in the online space is fast food brands. They’re killing it lately! Two we love to watch in particular are Taco Bell and Wendy’s. We’ve picked 3 lessons we’ve taken from them that we think everyone should know, and today we’re here to share them with you.
Stick to the bit
The biggest lesson we’ve ever learned from fast food marketing is to pick a lane and stick to it. It truly doesn’t matter what the lane is or how chaotic. All that matters is consistency. From Wendy’s Facebook strategy of posting like a boomer to Taco Bell’s very solid handle on making trending memes relevant to their brand, if you build it and stick to it, the right audience will come, and they will be big fans.
Leverage partnerships
Taco Bell has leveraged extremely valuable partnerships with brands like Milkbar and Mike’s Hot Honey, while Wendy’s has chosen to lean into cross-promotion with other brands like Takis and Thin Mints recently. You may choose to go the influencer route as well, but don’t sleep on working with other businesses! Finding brand partnerships offers an opportunity to expand your audience, create new brand loyalty, and keep people guessing what you’ll be up to next.
Engage with your community
Staying engaged with your community is much more than just responding to comments and DM’s. Doing that is very important, but it’s also important to stay relevant in the social media environment with other conversations that align with your industry. Taco Bell and Wendy’s do a great job at showing up in the comments of viral conversations, usually with humor that links the conversation back to their brand and what they sell.
Know your brand voice
Last but possibly most important, know your brand voice inside and out. Brands that win big have a tone and voice that is so consistent and recognizable that followers could probably pick it out of a crowd even without a username and profile picture attached. Work your tag line into conversation, create notable brand words, and commit to frequently used verbiage that aligns with your overall brand voice.
Consistency really is the difference maker here. No matter what style and tone you choose for marketing, identify your audience and speak to them the same way every time, for a long time. You’ll reap the benefits and create a community of people who love your brand.
